Lets start with Apprentice Xehanort. AX through uknown means (persumably his keyblade) turned himself into a heartless. However, his Heartless, according to the reports in KH1 retained consciousness upon transofrmation even to AX's surprise.Though this is kinda weird cause he sounded pretty sure about casting his body aside to continue his research so why did he then say he expected different results? Did he want to essentially kill himself but then how would he "plunge deeper into darkness"? Maybe the trranslation wasnt good.

Anyway, now, here is the thing. Nobodies, are continuations of the original person. Once the person becomes a heartless, if their will is strong, then their consciousness carries over unto the Nobody. However, in Ansem's case, he retained consciousness as a heartless so there what consciousness did Xemnas have? A new one like Roxas. Though what i dont get is, if the heartless kept the memories then where did Xemnas get his memories from? Perhaps it could be that he used those white pods like the nes Sora used?

And maybe, by sleeping in them, not only he regained memories as Xehanort but also memories from his past life as the player of Ux. Which is why during his "death" scene in KH3, he says something about his companions, refering to Marluxia and Larxene, possibly remembering his fiendship with them and realizing what he had done. It just a theory ofc. The fanbase has generally settled that Xemnas has a bit of terra in him which is something not confirmed in any way yet its established as cannon for some reason. I personally think that Xemnas was Xehanort but by regaining some memories he remembered things from his past life.

As I understand it Nobodies originally are suppose to have their memories from their past lives and use it to remember how to "fake" emotions and their personalities. How much of this remains intact with how much Nobodies have changed over the years is hard to pinpoint.

Xemnas had memories of Apprentice Xehanort in KH2. I don't know where Ansem SOD gets his stuff from, since Heartless aren't suppose to remember being humans since they are monsters? He's a special case like Sora was. In KH2FM they added the Xemnas/Terra thing to advertise BBS, once the game released and Terra-Xehanort arrived, Xemnas stopped having any on-screen association with it including talking to Aqua's armor. But he was still the Nobody of Terra's possessed body so he still was connected to him, how much memory he truly had of Terra depends on how much amnesia Apprentice Xehanort truly had.

About Xemnas missing his companions, because he doesn't name drop anyone in particular and how many characters he is connected to it could mean literally anyone when you get right to it.

its never really explained tbh tbh. but for all we know, the reports in KH1 make it clear that Ansem SOD and Apprentice Xehanort are the same person.

yes but there is no confirmation that Xemans did that cause of terra. In fact, if you read the dialogue the word "friend" is in brackets indicating that Xemans is merely pretending to be Terra. Its not the first time, Ansem in KH1 uses riku's battle quotes during his battle with sora, xehanort is that depraved that he likes pretending to be somone else either for personal gain or just to torment people
