Got bored of waiting for replies. Thought I'd throw in the next chapter.
Chapter Six: On The Run
"What? So now we're up against people as strong as you?" asked Aeris.
Kadaj and Destiny had told Aeris everything, which included about the special forces of SOLDIER now infected with Jenova cells. Heck, all the forces of SOLDIER were infected with them. Even Rufus Shinra had Jenova cells in his own body. The only ones without them were the Turks, Cloud and the others in jail with him. That was all they could tell Aeris.
"But why should we still trust you?" asked Denzel, looking very angry.
"Denzel! Calm down!" said Marlene. "Sit down. Please, Denzel?"
"Marlene ..." began Denzel.
"We have to trust him because he is the strongest one of us who can protect us right now," said Destiny.
"But you're powerful too, right?" asked Aeris. "You are a Mensik, after all."
"Yeah, but not until I become the guardian of the Lifestream," said Destiny. "So, Kadaj. What are we going to do until then?"
"We're going to make a trip to Nibelheim, but we have to get out of here fast," said Kadaj. "Knowing Hojo, he'll be trying to find us right now. But! That's no reason to run either. But we have to run anyway. Hojo will search the whole of Midgar's ruins for us and Edge as well. For now, we'll go to Kalm and rest there. Then I'll tell you all I know of what on earth is going on."
He went outside and got on his motorbike. Destiny smiled as she came out and then stared out at the flowers. "They're so beautiful ..." she whispered as she watched Marlene run out of the house and pick some flowers up. "They're as beautiful as the planet." She looked concerned. "We have to save this planet from its own destruction."
"That's right," said Aeris. "Just as we did three years ago and a year ago."
"And that meant you dying," said Kadaj. "But I suppose you knew it had to come to past."
"I need to make a stop," said Destiny.
Kadaj looked at her as she started to walk out of the area. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"Supplies," she simply said and then disappeared back into the main Midgar ruins.
In the meantime, Vincent jumped up the hill beyond the Chocobo farm just beyond where the Midgar Zolom had once roamed and Sephiroth had killed it mercilessly. Barret was right behind him shooting down any monsters that came in their way, whilst Vincent was clawing his way up and shooting the occasional monster with his gun.
"Looks like we made it this far, huh?" said Barret. "Can't find Marlene, but it seems that Shinra doesn't have her either. Maybe Denzel took her somewhere safe. For now, I guess it's just you and me, pal."
"Yes," said Vincent. "Perhaps we should go to Corel Town? I suspect that some old faces will be there."
"You don't mean ..." began Barret. "I can't face that again, man. Eleanor ... Dyne ... my wife ... I couldn't take it seeing their faces. They'd haunt me for life."
"You should learn to deal with it," said Vincent as his red ripped cloak floated in the air. "You should learn to be a man and handle anything that comes your way."
"Huh! Maybe you're right," said Barret. "Maybe I can handle this. But I sure hope that Dyne hasn't got Marlene. Who knows what he'd do to her?"
"If I was a dead man and my best friend has my own daughter, I'd mercilessly hunt down my daughter immediately," said Vincent. "To know what a Lifestream soul's motives are, you'd have to think like a Lifestream soul. They only think of revenge and havoc. But then ... look at what Kadaj did earlier."
"That silver haired ass is back?!" yelled Barret.
"I heard from Reno before," he continued. "That he'd changed in a way. He wasn't the same remnant of Sephiroth that Cloud once fought. I think he has reformed. I think Cloud saved him before he died and his spirit passed on to the Lifestream."
"You use your head a lot, yeah?" he said. "Well! I gotta find Marlene or else that Dyne's gonna get to her first!"
Back in the Midgar ruins, Destiny had agreed to meet Kadaj at the front of the ruins where the entrance to Midgar had once been. He, Aeris, Denzel and Marlene waited there for her return.
"She's not coming back, is she?" said Denzel, sounding impatient.
"Trust me," said Kadaj. "She will come back. Why do you still hold a grudge against me?"
"Because you brainwashed me and used me, you son of a bitch!" he yelled.
"Denzel!" said Aeris. "Please. Not now ..."
Denzel looked angry still, but he hugged Marlene. "Don't worry," he whispered. "I'm going to take good care of you, I promise."
And then seconds later, Destiny arrived on her own truck. "I'm here," she said.
"So what did you have in mind when you said supplies?" asked Kadaj.
"Oh, just the usual things I carry," she said. "I have food, drinks, medicine and of course, my own mini-truck. Aeris, Denzel and Marlene can get on. You can cover us whilst we travel."
"And here I was thinking that I'd have you sat with me on the motorbike ..." smiled Kadaj. "Only messing, Aeris. I am taking this as seriously as you know I would."
But Aeris did not let it go so easily. She climbed and clambered on to the back of the pickup truck with Denzel and Marlene. As Destiny closed the mini door at the back, she walked to Kadaj and spoke to him.
"Kadaj, promise me you won't get yourself killed, right?" she asked.
"You're the one that's supposed to see the future," said Kadaj. "You tell me what my fate will be, Destiny. You are the all knowing destiny after all."
With that, he got on to his motorbike and started it up. Destiny got into the pickup truck and turned the engine on. "Are you three all right in the back?" she asked.
"Yes! We're fine," said Aeris.
"Then get ready for the ride of your lives," said Destiny.
"This is gonna be sweet!" said Denzel. "A girl driving? Come on!"
"You obviously underestimate what spunky girls can do," she said. "Hit it, Kadaj."
"With pleasure," he smiled and then rode his motorbike on one wheel and then went speeding into the glass exit. The glass smashed and he stopped when he had broken through. "There's more room for a pickup truck now."
Destiny drove the pickup through the smashed exit and then drove with Kadaj. "Watch our backs!" she told him. "Make sure that SOLDIER aren't coming! Remember! You're the only one that can handle them!"
"Do you have to remind me?" he asked irritably. But then he noticed that Hojo was watching from a distance. "He's sending them out." And then came SOLDIER on motorbikes that were rubbish compared to his. Kadaj took out his double sword and started to attack them since they also had swords.
"Where's Mother?" they asked.
"He's hiding her!" they said.
"No! He could be lying!" they said. "He might have Mother with him now!"
Kadaj ignored what they were saying and outmatched their strength, but it wasn't or didn't look easy. He had a hard time getting rid of them. Their power was great and immense than Kadaj had ever imagined. He continued to use his own power to get rid of them. It was occasionally that he sent green blasts at them with the materia he still wielded from a year ago.
"I said this wouldn't be easy!" sang Destiny as she took out the duplicate Buster Sword and slashed the motorbikes getting to the right handside of the truck. "Damn these SOLDIER guys!"
"Destiny!" said Aeris. "Let me take the wheel whilst you take them out!"
"No way! You can protect us, right? That's what Kadaj said, didn't he?" she asked.
"He did?" said Aeris, looking at Kadaj. "He just ASSUMED that I would."
"Will you?" said Destiny. "I can see anything that gets attacked at me from behind because of the visions. All I need is your protection and we can get out of this mess."
"I ... I will try to do my best," said Aeris.
"No, Aeris! You WILL do your best!" said Kadaj. "I know you can do it!" He kept on slashing SOLDIER until they jumped into the air.
"Kadaj! Look out!" yelled Destiny. She sent a green beam from her pearl and it destroyed the SOLDIER around him. Feeling relieved that there were no more from SOLDIER, she stopped the truck. Kadaj swerved his motorbike and looked at Midgar. They were many miles away from it now.
"Goodbye, Midgar," he said. "And hello, Kalm."
They were just metres away from the small village nearby. Kadaj went ahead and rode there with Destiny driving the truck behind him trying to keep up with him.
"It appears that my strength was not needed," said Aeris.
"It will be needed someday," said Destiny. "I know what you're thinking. You will be reunited with him one day. You'll be able to tell him how you feel."
"What do you mean?" asked Aeris.
"Oh, you know what I mean," she said and smiled. "It's destiny speaking for itself. Perhaps it should be left alone for now."
Aeris did leave it alone as Destiny had predicted and expected. She opened the door and stepped out of the truck looking at Kadaj. Kadaj smiled and looked at her. "It seems we did it," he said.
"Uh-uh!" she said. "YOU did it. You didn't need our help anyway. You had all the strength you needed. Now come on, let's take the truck and your motorbike to the Kalm garage to get them checked out. And don't worry about the money, I have it covered."
"You're rich as well as seeing the future?" asked Kadaj. "Do you by any chance gamble with your powers?"
"I certainly do not!" said Destiny, looking annoyed.
"Fine then," said Kadaj as he got back on to his motorbike. "So be it." Destiny got back into the truck and got behind the wheel again. Together, they drove to Kalm and parked their vehicles in the garage.
Kadaj and Destiny escorted Aeris, Denzel and Marlene to the hotel where they all rested. Destiny shared a room with Aeris and Marlene, whilst Kadaj was left to share a room with Denzel. This was the least of all that he wanted on the planet ... to be left alone in a room with Denzel, who hated him the most.
"This is for the best right now," he told Denzel as they both came into the room. "You can't exactly be with the girls right now. I need to talk to you as well, Denzel."
Denzel shut the door and jumped on to a bed marking his territory. "Gonna tell me that I'm Mother's special child again?" he said. "I know who you were talking about. Cloud told me. You were talking about Jenova, the Calmity of the Skies. I'm not as thick as I look anymore."
"We need some man talk and I want to take out the man out of you, Denzel," said Kadaj. "I know you're young and all, but I really want you to do your best."
For once, Denzel wasn't angry. He was confused and curious. "What do you mean, my best?" he said. "Are you asking me to do something for you?"
"Yes," said Kadaj. "I want you to protect Marlene just in case Aeris cannot protect the two of you."
"You mean she won't be able to do it?" asked Denzel.
"I mean that I need you in case of something happening should myself, Destiny or Aeris fail in the mission of protecting you two," he said. "Shinra is after you. You know, right? Well, it's time to let go of the past! You need to be thinking of the present time now! You need to think of the future as well. We need to save Cloud and everyone else, right? You want Tifa out of there, right? Now is the time to put aside our differences and work together."
But Denzel did not reply to this right away. He crossed his arms. "So what's in it for me?" he asked.
Kadaj was annoyed. How could a young boy be asking what was in it for him when there was no time for this? Alas, he kept being patient and thought about it carefully. But what could I do for him? I guess Destiny might not like what I have in plan, but it's the only way. "Tell you what, Denzel," he said. "We're travelling the world. You're coming with us, right?"
"I know that, silly," said Denzel. "I said what's in it for ME?"
"Well," said Kadaj. "If you do a really good job of protecting Marlene from Shinra or anything else that comes our way, I'll ... take you to the Gold Saucer."
"R-Really?! I've always wanted to go there!" said Denzel.
"Sure, Denzel," said Kadaj. "Do your job and I'll do mine. Then we're both even."
"Ok then!" said Denzel. He yawned and climbed into bed with a smile on his face. "Who knows, Kadaj? Maybe you really have ... changed." And with that, he rested his head on the pillow and began to sleep.
"No one can get to sleep that easily," said Kadaj to himself as he himself got into bed.
