You know, it's weird... On one hand, I definitely feel like this game was one step forward, two steps back for Kairi. And that we're somehow back at the "You can't go... because it's way too dangerous" moment of KH1... when it was nice that Re:Mind had sort of had Kairi and SoKai evolve from that moment, with Sora asking her if she was "ready for this" and Kairi responding "yes", and them defeating Master Xehanort together.
But on the other hand... why do I feel like this is the closest we've gotten to KHII Kairi since KHII? Kairi telling Riku she wanted to go with him--and almost seeming like she was about to go through the portal with him until she rethought it--felt like the girl who said, "I'm tired of waiting, so don't tell me to stay behind. From now on, wherever one of us goes, the other follows. Got it?" And even though she took herself out of the mission in the end, at least it was her choice and with drive to go train with Aqua and get better... and then finally stand with Sora and Riku.
Seriously, this feels like KHII Kairi again. To me, KHIII Kairi and Re:Mind Kairi didn't feel like Kairi at all... but somehow, this does. What happened to that girl before now? I know you could say that KHIII was taking that arc forward, but it feels like she didn't even try there. Seriously, what happened? I'm still mad that after all the things she said in text bubble scenes in KHII, she didn't train with her Keyblade at all during the three's mini vacation between KHII and DDD, and just let Sora and Riku leave without her (something that KHII Kairi said she was done with), with no explanation.
I kind of agree with people who said the real Kairi died with KHII Kairi or after KHII. But this was maybe a glimpse of her again.
And I'm starting to ramble here, and probably not making that much sense. But you know what? Kairi's arc as it is now, is... fine (I guess. With her training with Merlin, but it really not doing anything for her--and her then getting killed, and regretting things greatly--and deciding that she needs to train with Aqua to get stronger... that will hopefully go somewhere). But this all should have happened
last saga. Seriously, Nomura should have given her an arc post-KHII. And if he wanted this to happen, this could have been it. But with this all only happening to her in the second saga, it just pushes her further and further away from Sora and Riku, and no matter what she's never going to catch up
