Some Help on Lock On & Short Cut

I really don't get how to do lock on and short cut. Can some explain me how do I use it in the game? I just started playing Days today because I got it yesterday for Christmas ( I know it isn't fair and all).

You press R to lock-on. As for short-cuts, I'm not too sure. I don't use them. XD

Don't you have to double press R for lock on?

Double tap R for lock on.

Hold L then press the assigned A,B,X or Y for shortcuts.

To assign shortcuts go to the magic menu, move over to assigned magic, press L then press your designated shortcut.
