Spoiler ShowMy thoughts on KH3
I feel like a lot of it was poorly written and poorly paced. The reunions of the trios were lacking and felt too quick and the way in which they were done in quick succession within the other makes it too quick to even process and just lacks emotional depth. They fight the enemy with sora then sora yeets out to go help someone else.
I feel like we should have played as either roxas or axel, aqua or ventus during the reunion fights having sora there was ok but I feel like the reunions would have worked better if each trio had dealt with their respective arc on their own. It was kind of off putting having sora shout out to terra to fight off the darkness instead of having either aqua or ven who have more of an emotional connection to him to do it. It just kind of pulled me out of it.
The saving Aqua portion of the story was handled really badly, it was once again done too quickly and once again falls down to Sora and just Sora to save her. It kind of sucks that we cant even team up with Riku to help fend her off, she is a key blade master one who has fallen to the darkness so she should have been insanely powerful if there was a time to put like a first battle followed by a second or third for a boss fight it would have beennthere maybe each battle you get closer towards freeing her from the darkness hell maybe even have her face off Ventus in the last tier and have him save her. Give me something man.
Then how everything was shoehorned after you completed all the Disney worlds, completing them felt like a chore just so I can get to the reason why I bought the game in the first place to see how everything pans out but it was done in such an awfully paced and awfully written way I didnt enjoy it.
On the surface level everything is done but it's done on the surface level, theres not really any depth and if there is you have to really look close at all these nuances. Not to say that nuances are bad but there are ways in which to write a story which places the nuances in such a way that the audience can catch on better than the way they have done in the game.
I've read a lot about the Disney worlds and their relation to the theme of the game which seems to be about separation/love and stuff which I guess is supposed to parallel kairi and sora.
The relation the worlds have with the story is best represented I think in toy box with woody essentially telling the darkness to fuck off .
As sora goes through these worlds hes supposed to learn about the power of waking but hes also learning about love and separation.
But he doesnt really learn.
Which is why I found it so out of character for him to breakdown and say hes nothing without his friends.
Apart from the fact that he alone was able to save aqua or how he was able to open a portal to the dark realm and use the power of waking to wake up ventus. Adding up various other things hes done by his own strength. He has so much strength by himself that yes this strength comes from his friends and his connection but to fail to have him realize that it also
comes from him is really disheartening.
And all of these worlds deal with being ok with separation but also refusing separation. Woody refuses to let buzz be overtaken by the darkness, rapunzel refuses to let eugene die, anna refuses to leave Elsa alone, hiro refuses to allow the darkness take baymax and ruin what he and takashi stood for thus honoring their memory, Jack refuses to let will die.
But sora breaks down when they are gone and gives up and basically invalidates Riku's worth by saying he sora is worthless now that the others are gone. But he doesnt fight for them to come back he gives up. Which is so frustrating given by what he went through and learned in the Disney worlds. I get that this is an arc that's like "my friends are my power!" But Riku his best friend for life, the other half of the gayblade his ultimate champion is STILL THERE. they both should have fended off the demon tower not just riku. Both of them should have refused to give up with them both dying in the end and sora bringing everyone back because sora.
His breakdown would have made sense had everyone died including riku, but riku was there so his hope shouldnt have been so demolished as it was.
And then in the final battle when he says this, "A real leader knows that destiny is beyond his control and accepts that."
What?
Sora literally defied fate by bringing back his friends. So to have him say that to xehanort is baffling.
My main gripe with the game was sora's arc and how it tied up the arc of the other guardians of light.
And I hated how they kept dragging sora like lay off the kid jeez hes the one saving you all I swear it would have been better to have sora realize he has strength on his own right which is where I thought they were going but nah it about friends are my power.
And then I didnt like it at all how kairi and sora were like pushed to become this love story which based on prior games I would have believed it if it came right after kh1 but how they handled kairi and sora in kh2
Sora seemed more concerned with Riku. And the following spin off games were always riku and sora. With kairi doing nothing because nomura has some vendetta against her.
I dont think I have to go into detail by how she was not given proper treatment in the third game and was reduced to damsel in distress yet again because I'm sure it has been talked about to death. Ha.
I think in the final battle it would have been great to team up with her and riku or ventus and aqua and terra. Have the trio who started the franchise finally fight together and protect one another and finish the arc once and for all or if we could have teamed up with diff trios during the different tiers of the last boss fight. Or maybe have sora team up with each of them individually during the different sections of the boss fight. Let the other guardians have their part in the end of this arc as they have their own agency in it. Geez.
So much potential and it was such a waste esspecially since this was such a short game. Or it probably felt short given by how everything was spaced out.
I just have such a problem with the storytelling agh like I know kh has never been a master of storytelling but theres a reason why we kept playing after kh1 and thereafter. It was just so disappointing.
And then this whole verum rex thing which idk why I feel so offended that nomura would use kh to put in his own ffxv spin off idea to test the masses, would have been cool to team up with him maybe I'd be warmer to the idea of verum rex becoming an actual thing.
There was a whole lot of plot holes like roxas and xion and grating things like the random power of the past like where was that power before??
And then frozen and tangled being a play by play and empty environments . I have gripes with the gameplay but that comes in second to the story. As it was the last for the xehanort saga it should have dealt with everything pertaining to that in a way that ties up everything with justice.
Cause it's over, were not gonna get heartfelt reunions like riku and sora got in kh2 that was done outside the heat of battle and without the sense of urgency to move on to the next boss fight.
With sora's character arc in wish it wasnt so stagnant and so focused on his strength coming from his friends, especially after he failed the mastery exam I could understand how he felt like he was inadequate especially by how everyone kept telling him so throughout the game, it would have been so satisfying to see him grow more in this game and lead into the second game which looks like it might be dealing with things in a more mature manner idk.
Because in the beginning he was all about his friends being his power or the connections he has what have you and in the end it's the same. With that breaking point all the maturity he may have gained regressed cause he was like I still am dependent on my friends.
It's just not a good message and especially that whole accepting destiny when sora has been actively going against what fate has in store for the whole series. He fights back to protect his friends and pretty much everyone. It would have been great to see how that effected him until the breaking point but then maybe have him realize his own worth too.
It's ok to have a selfless hero, but he doesnt progress and become an independent hero for the whole of idk how many games hes been the protagonist for and this one was the right time to do it cause ur concluding essentially his childhood, our childhood.
Idk.
