How idiotic. They could have placed boats all around the spill and created a containment and collect zone and decreased the amount of oil spreading out to the ocean.

Maybe this will make people wake up and stop using oil. We have so many other forms of energy that can be used. Wind power, solar energy, algae biofuel...-sigh- I could go on.

Yeah, you got me good. Three minutes!

The problem is that there is way too much money involved in the oil business. Any oil tycoon will go as far as possible to ride out their success as far as they can. Think about it. These are some of the most powerful people on earth. Both because of their product, but also their vast wealth. This may sound paranoid, but these are the kind of people that could make you disappear AND make it seem you never existed in the first place. They know how powerful they are and they know that in the long run they will have to change to something else. But the long run means: when other people are running the joint. Then it won't be their concern anymore.
And those alternatives you mentioned, while preferable in several ways, require very expensive investments and (supposedly) don't bring up as much. So they chooose the easy way out.
