The only thing that's different is his emotions can become physical beings, he's able to think and plan, along with actually being able to control the power of his heart. It ain't that simple.
I editted that post. Heartless can summon other Heartless. Certain HEartless [Xehanort] could probably summon nobodies.
Nobodies can cummon both. Vanitas has shown us that he can summon Unversed. Anyone with a dark heart could summon Heartless.
Hell, Riku summoned an Anti Sora.
And Xehanort was able to think and plan and control the powers of his heart. He was alo able to possess a human.
So you don't think Vanitas has the ability to become a heartless at will? Because he fits the criteria:
He is a literally heart given form by being removed from someone. That sounds like Sora. A projection of a heart.
Vanitas' form was gained through darkness, however, he is still a heart.
Sora's form was gained by Kairi purifying his darkness with her light. [snicker]
They just sound like two hearts going through the same prcess, with the exception of one is light nd the other is dark.

Lol! Anyways, he could, but we don't know if they will. You have to take account that he's literally raw darkness and could even be more special than Ansem since he could actually spot out beings rather than summon them. I think that he could summon them and Sai'x said the Heartless go to whoever's strongest. But still, you never know.

if vanitas were to come back (which we see in the trailer) does that mean unversed return to? so we might possibly have 3 enemies running around at once if vanitas becomes revived by KH3?

Huh, when you think about it.. that does make some sense.
Regarding the Unversed, it depends on how Vanitas returns. He may not even be there physically, especially considering how this is the RoS.
yeah but we dont know what the YX/GHB is capable of, or whether or not he posesses the ability to bring Vanitas back to the RoL
Like I said, that may not even be Vanitas physically; it's possible YX just summoned a "phantom" of Vanitas based off of his persona. Speculative, but Nomura did say that people of darkness would appear wherever YX is.
Ven rejected and destroyed Vanitas in BBS, he won't come back just because Ven does.
If Ven comes back, he can only do so by connecting his heart to Sora's. Sora's darkness would fill the gap of where Vanitas' would go.
Their hearts are already connected and Sora gave Ven light, not darkness. ^__^

That doesn't make sense at all.
Sora's heart was(and is) connected to Ventus, not to Vanitas. Vanitas only gained Sora's looks due to his still remaining connection to Ventus.
Ven's heart went to sleep (or rather, was forced to) because it was so heavily damaged after the destruction of the X-blade the connection to Sora wasn't sufficient enough to keep it going.
The injury was worse than when Vanitas was created, so something more than the connection was needed.
It was Ven's connection to Sora's heart which allowed Sora to feel Ven's great pain and sadness after his heart was nearly destroyed in the ending of the Final Episode.
Riku even commented on it when he suggested to Sora what to do because someone connected to him is sad.
Sora then reaches out to Ven's wounded heart ("Can you hear me?"), which follows Sora's voice through their connection into Sora's heart where Ven then pleads with Sora to let him stay.
