Hello everyone, I'm here today to let all of you guys know that today i'ts going to be a VERY important event here in São Paulo-Brazil
All begin with the raise of the buss pass ( raise R$ 0,20). the people that were protesting in the streets faced the cruelty of the policy/military, since this day 3 weeks of manifestations all over Brazil started, Its not about R$ 0,20 cents anymore!! I'ts about security, health and the corrupt that are in power.

Later today will be another HUGE manifestation against the government, we (the people) that go in peace to the streets have to face the oppression of the police/military! the use of unnecessary force against de civilians!
My point is do not believe in what the press show to you!! they don't even CARE to show how the people are trying to FIGHT against the corrupt! they try to hide this with football! We do not care about the cup!

Today the Brazilians are screaming THE GIANT HAS AWAKE!
PS: sorry for my bad english, please do not let they hide the truth with football!

Yeah, shit's really going down here.

It's honestly a bit surprising that people are caring so much, it's not common for brazilians to protest much nowadays unless it has to do with stupid bullshit, but anything that shakes people out of apathy is nice i guess. whether you think the increase of a bus fare is trivial or not, it really isn't about just that anymore. anyone who's in the know about brazil's political situation would know it's a disgrace. you could pitch a circus tent in brazilia and nobody would know the difference. we've spent billions on structures for the world cup, which we aren't even remotely ready to host. i guess the bus fare was just the straw that broke the camel's back and a lot of people are just sick of it.

Hope things turn out well for Brazil though. It's always made me kinda proud to see people not putting up with any government's shit if it's clear they aren't listening.

Here's a video that more or less gets you up to speed if you don't know what's going on. I encourage you to look up other videos on YT and look into our political situation if you want a better idea of why these protests are occurring.

i've been hearing about this through my co-worker who is Brazilian. It seems a lot of what has been going on has been behind closed doors up until now. So it's good to see that this has been leaked out to the public. The government of Brazil is definitely suppressing you guys of your necessities, considering the situation with Fifa as far as i know. That's pretty fucked up. I hope you guys pull through, and something positive happens out of all this. My regards to Brazil

This is absolutely sickening. It's making my blood boil. Paolo, I hope you keep us updated with the situation and I hope that the Brazilian people win against the government.

I applaud the revolution. Lord knows the rest of Latin America, my country included, needs this.

So uh, the movement is being hijacked by fascist thugs.

Well, shit.

Related note: it's astounding how Reddit is being stupider than usual about current events.

The circumstances are similar to the events preceding the military coup in 64, but fortunately it's not very likely that something like that will actually happen.

These are my observations, based on translations and materials made available to me by Brazilian friends, I'd be intersted in hearing your (and other people's) two cents on the matter:

I find it very disconcerting that vocal media outlets there initially strongly condemned the protests (supporting military action against them, like Jabor) but the popularity of the public support for them turned this tone around (lol), again, even people like Jabor then supporting the protests. But unfortunately, then these media outlets starting insisting these events were about "much more" (which is true...) but via listing popular anti-leftist sentiment, which is dangerous, considering how much of the protest composed of leftist and radical leftist groups (not the initial one, which I believe was launched by the anarchist MPL) even though PT is left/social democrat, the initial protests in response to mayor Haddad and PSDB governor Alckimin, who claims to be social democrat but we know isn't. This is important because such sentiment has been used by the PSDB in the past and what happened now, legitimizing their hard-right tendencies, this story being cemented in international eyes via videos like this.

Now, I understand and sympathize with this rhetoric, but notice how there's nothing intrinsically socialist about the video (which is also a personal bias, of my sociopolitical views) and you know how even main-stream and right-wing media there has selectively pushed against corruption. And this is what I'm worried about, the hijacking of a movement. Like, Rede Globo is owned by who? Bajillionare heirs of Marinho, who in 2007 tried to artificially create that "popular" anti-PT march, which a lot of rich celebrities were eager (or paid) to hop on to. And as you said, the circumstances are similar to the '64 coup, which, we will remember, was preceded by a march composed of reactionary millions against Goulart and instead in favour of hard-right policies. I'm just sayin.

Again, I think there's a lot of evidence, often ignored by the mainstream media there, and certainly here, about the turn of the tide. Like, who was it that suggested an anti-corruption agenda? A chief of police negotiating with the MPL. Indeed the bulk of the opposition to the Worker's Party doesn't come from the far-left, as I observe anyway, but rather the PSDB and other far-right factions. I mean, shit, we have signs like this being carried out? We have red flags being burned in Paulista Ave b/c the president is demanding to be impeached, because capitalist, neoliberal democracy will help a la PDSB? Hint: it won't.

We do have leftists and their parties now fighting to reclaim their part of the movement, a charade that's moralised and claimed to be apolitical, while the media and the right-wing are denouncing "party" politics like the anarchists, who are not even responding to this discourse, we've seen even the far-right demand for the abolition of parties, like in '64.

I mean, we even have the likes of the goddamned Federation of Industries of Sao Paulo supporting the protests! So many warning signs all over the place!!

(sorry if this is a bit incoherent, i'm just real mad, and these are an outsider's observation)

That's unfortunate. You'd be surprised how often the same criminal actions by state and city gov't happens in America. People being put on buses out of town(there it's the gangs, but here it's poor people in some places) and poor people having their homes torn down for new stadiums, even when one is still being used has happened.

Point is I'm sharing this video with as many people as I can.

another disgusting thing is how people seem to be mocking the protests.

yes...and the media only focus on the bastards destroing and seting fire at things in the middle of it!

I was last week in the protest..Some losers started to kick the police car...we (the good people) just sit down to point the criminals...
THAT the media don't show...this makes me sooooo mad!

well, the news is: they turn back on the R$ 0,20 (not only here in São Paulo but in many other city's) but the protests are still happening, now they say that the protests don't have a specific cause anymore...
well...That are so many shit to change...and the answer is simple...the brazilians have reached the limit of all this crap!

tomorrow I'm going to the protest again! wish me luck guys! so that I don't get shot by the police if something happen...Hope not..Last week nothing got wrong... =P

Focusing on the assholes is pretty much standard operating procedure for the media nowadays, it happens everywhere. They have the idea that it makes for "better" news.

That said, I hope you guys are okay over there and that you get what you want (and deserve). The idea that something like a World Cup is needed to "turn the country" around reeks off corruption to me. Hosting events of that scale have a tendency to be bad for your economy in the long run. It's all about "prestige".
