Maybe he got them when he was still Lea. Lea looks like the sort of kid who would randomly decide to do something like that just for the lulz. "Hey, Isa, you know what I need? Facial tattoos! Shaped like tears! Under my eyes! Hellz yeah!"

I've thought about how it's just a character design, but this would make a lot of sense.

Sorry - just wanted to clear up what the tear tattoos mean (even though most of you don't care)
But it means you have killed someone had have gotten away with it.
That was the orignal meaning.
It is mostly relevant to gangs but more people get it done when they haven't done that crime.
Just to make themselves look tougher and hopefully more people will 'fear' them.

They're not tears, but they definitely are tattoos.

But anyways... I, too, thought that his tatoos were just diamonds/triangles. I don't think I ever thought they were tears until I came to KHI forums...

At first, it was likely a, "He's gangsta, see?" but now it's probably more like, "Something happened in between Birth by Sleep and when we first saw him! And it might not have been something like the loss of his heart!"

However, at first it could have been just irony and allusions to clowns and mimes with their tears, acting as though they gave a damn ("sad") or were just depressed through their mask of make-up. Ironic in that Axel couldn't care less about someone, yet he was "enjoying" himself during CoM, and then he ended up giving a damn about Roxas... So I wouldn't leave it to "just character design" but something more like "it was just for the lulz"...

Yeah, it's what I think. Clowns paint their faces to parody exaggerated emotions.... it seems quite ironic in the case of Axel.

The teardrop is mostly from people from the "hood"
and I should know since I have family/friends that have em

and I dont think Axel is from the hood

Or maybe he is? I don't know about you, but Axel seemed quite gangsta as Lea. He sports a scarf that looks like the ones worn by some gangs, and Lea also acted like a mischievous, hot-shot rebel kid back then.

I doubt it. Radiant Garden is the closest thing i've seen to a suburb in KH. Axel was probably the kid who always had something "funny" to say in the back of the class.

So I just read that Wikipedia article on the meaning of teardrop tattoos. According to Wiki, the tattoo is almost associated almost always associated with prison tattoos and membership in a gang. Of course Wikipedia isn't always reliable, but I made this connection that perhaps Organization XIII is Axel's "gang", and he probably got those tattoos around the time he became a member of the Org. The tattoo also symbolizes murder of someone, and Axel is quite the murderer.

edit: So I read up more on these tattoos, and one of the meanings (the symbol has evolved to represent the loss of a friend or loved one has died) could also imply that Axel got them when Saix died while both of them were held prisoners by Ansem's six apprentices?
