I don't really need character development for Sora. Other characters can take that narrative and have. Sora is a goofy, lovable, ball of light, and I'm fine with him staying like that.

Character development can come in two flavors: progression and reveal. Progression is what people usually think of character development as it's an outward change in a character's demeanor. Reveal is more subtle and doesn't really change a character's demeanor, just our perception of the character.
So I don't think Sora went through significant character development in 2 or DDD we just saw different sides of him.
I'm fully prepared to be lynched with this thread but I'm hoping we can have a reasonable discussion here.
I've been playing KH since 2006. I had a period of 7 years where I didn't play it only came back to it when 1.5HD Remix was released.
With the release of KH3, I personally feel Sora has hardly had any character development throughout the saga. He still retains the same personality and he has learned a lot about hearts however he is always ignoring others advice and decides to do his own thing, regardless of the consequences.
In KH3, it is obvious that there are hints as to what Sora's fate will be and it did surprise me that Sora effectively died at the end. He was warned. He always did what he wanted and followed through on what he thought was right, regardless of the consequences. When he decides to save Kairi, he is told that he may not come back and Sora is quite happy to still go. He genuinely believes he will come back, probably because he always has before, but clearly this time he hasn't. He's paid the price for his arrogance.
Sora is a very likable character, always cheerful, friendly and loyal to the people he holds dear. He wants to save everybody which is impossible.
But he never really progresses. He's still the same character he was in KH1, only older.
Compared to the strength and growth Riku has gone through over the series, Sora's character development (that I've seen) is minimal at best. That, for me at least, makes Riku the more compelling and interesting character.
I am fully prepared to be told I am wrong and that I am missing crucial elements that show Sora has developed as a character. But he still feels like the same Sora we met in KH1. So is he or not?
I would like to discuss this with everyone as I am interested to hear what others think. (I'm not interested in getting into an argument).
Quite possibly. So after KINGDOM HEARTS III, we pretty much saw his reckless side. Maybe in KHIV we'll see his reflective, insightful side?
Quite possibly.
I think it is possible to do both character progression and character reveals in the same story. I just don't think that has happened to Sora since the first game the same way it's happened to the other characters. I could be wrong- maybe he changed in DDD but I didn't notice because I really hated that story or 3 possibly changed him because it's the end of the saga and it should be a gamechanger.
As to whether or not Sora should have character development, that's up to your preferences. There are plenty of stories with static protagonists that don't change or supporting protagonists that do change but not that much and those are valid ways to tell a story.
Sora is a positive person who always sees good before bad, he can't possibly have any personal struggles unless you force them into the story for the sake of it.
Hard disagree here. Even positive people can grow and change. Static characters are boring, and even the happiest people can't be happy 100% of the time.
Proof of this?
Ventus actually has a character arc. :U
Sora has had plenty of character development. He gets stupider and stupider with each game.

Yeah, I'm just kidding, rest assured. I liked Sora in this better than I did in 2. In a perfect world, I'd hire a better actress for Aqua (or just a better voice director) and make her the main character and have Jack Skellington and the Reluctant Dragon travel alongside her for some kind of "Aqua, Jack, Dragon, you three must journey forth to rescue Queen Elsa because she's been kidnapped by Pete, and he's gonna force her to marry him!" plot...but this isn't that kind of world, so I'll take KH3 as is.
Spoiler Show(really? Not even on the beach with everyone? It's like they didn't want anyone from Final Fantasy in this game this time around, smh)
