killing sprees of this caliber aren't caused by people owning guns. these are highly premeditated and guns are not the cause of this, if someone wants to kill a dozen people, there are a lot of ways to do, a lot of which are probably easier than using a gun. such as mixing chlorine and bleach inside a building and locking to door or a molotov. both of these are much more horrendous.
before anyone says "screen for mental illness and boom problem solved" that isn't quite simple and it is already done to some extent. most states already have laws
prohibiting firearms to be in the possession of the mentally unstable, especially those that post a danger to others. however, most mental illness diagnosis cannot just be "herpderp tested for" and be done with it. most diagnosis for mental illness require long term persistence of the majority of the diagnostic requirements. some mental disorders such as psychopathic personality disorders are not even official diagnosis and there is no concrete guideline for meeting the criteria.
restricting access to guns would not do much but affect black market prices, if people really want to commit murder sprees they will. the fact that these aren't commonplace in society today is a testament to how much of a non-issue this is regarding guns and society. it is an issue with certain individuals and unfortunately there is not much that can be done until we have a deeper understanding of mental disorders and mental processes behind these individuals and are able to catch them early, diagnosis and treat them before any harm is done.
i'm sick and tired of people taking these tragedies and turning them into anti-gun propaganda bullshit. whether you like it or not, people have a constitutional right to have firearms, if this is infringed upon then what is stopping the rest of your rights to be infringed upon? what will you do when soldiers suddenly start living in your house? or you're forced to live by a religion you don't practice? or you certain words are banned and you get your tongue cut out for using them?
