Here in the UK, I don't think teachers and students have much of a relationship in comparison to what it's like in America. It's pretty sad, really.

That's kind of off topic, but the answer to the original post is "yes".

Meh, it depends. If I like the teacher then it's like w/e but if we don't get along then I'll try to not be seen.

OMG! I worked as a cashier at the store at saturday and my science teacher from high school came to buy some beer xD I didn't recognize him at first (he has changed a lot!) But he did recognize me... Wow... Words can't describe how akward the whole situation was...

I too have a dress code and find it strange to see them waring anything else.

some of them go to my church, and try to start a conversation with me and that's really akward.

My friends and I happened to bump into our science teacher while we were at a fair. Only minutes ago I had said 'Wouldn't it be really awkward if *insert teacher's name* was here" xD
Actually, it turned out not to be that bad, much to our surprise xD

I have seen almost all my teachers outside of school...
It's not weird, maybe because we don't have any uniforms. (YAY!)
But I have noticed, that it's odd to see f. ex. your math teacher driving a car. XDD Otherwise I'm fine with it. :p

It's the same in Germany.

And to answer the question, no it's not embarassing to say hello to a teacher outside of school IMO. I always happen to see a teacher outside of school, be it in a supermarket, at the bus stop or whatever. I just say a quick hello and that's it.
